Malthusian logic too many ppl, not enough food being produced: not true, not a production issue, more of a distribution issue. Biofuels: food being diverted for fuels, governments had began to subsidize ethanol so more corn going into ethanol. Meatification: changing diets, a lot of food going towards animals, demand for food driven up food given to animals, high protein, low starch diet is more common now, cows are most inefficient animals, global increase in meat. Investors and big investment banks now trading in agriculture stocks in futures: financial demand in food increase prices, finance firms hoard contracts to corner markets, driving up price of food. Increasing profit for finance market: more expensive for consumers. Average person needs 2100-2200 kcal to have a sustainable lifestyle but currently producing more than needed, enough food is def. produced for the entire world.
