IDSB02H3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Ecosystem Services, World Development Report, Food Security
Document Summary
Idsb02 lecture 9: agriculture environment and development march 8th, 2017: agriculture under ecological and economic pressure, land scarcity, low soil fertility and soil degradation, soil and water contamination, dependence on multinational corporations and export crops. Increasing risk of climate change: agriculture and resource use, agriculture is the main consumptive human activity for many natural resources. Improved wheat and maize yields (funded predominately by us agencies) for agricultural modernization: plants characterized by, short growing season, pest resistance, high fertilizer response, genetically modified organisms. High organic matter: top 10 gm foods: In development, more immediate and likely critical concern is over ownership of crop resources: further entrenching power hierarchies, geo-politics of biotechnology. Improvements to soil and water management: enhance earning opportunities, particularly for women, alternatives to inorganic fertilizers, nutrient imbalances in agricultural development (vitousek et al. 2009: suggestions strategies for reducing environmental impacts, better-targeted timing and placement of nutrient inputs, modification to livestock diets, preservation or restoration of riparian vegetation strips.
