Document Summary

Human development is a process of enlarging people"s choice (undp, 1990: 10) Education allows individuals to gain knowledge and knowledge is important in making choices. Human capital theory sees education as a form of investment; the more education one has, the better school you go to, chances are one will find a better job. In recent years, governments have seen this as a key strategy for national growth, investing heavily in universities. Credentialism (qualification escalation, degree inflation): undergraduate degrees are common. Despite the progress made in developing countries over the last decade, 67 million children worldwide of whom approximately 53% are girls do not have access to basic education. For girls, children from minority ethnic groups, children with diabilities, and children in conflict areas, the barriers are even greater. An educated workforce is essential for stimulating sustainable economic growth and reducing poverty.
