Idsb02: lecture 10 - urban environments and development. One of the key spatial changes in human population patterns is the increase in those living in urban areas. Increasing share/proportion/percentage of population living in urban areas. It necessitates a declining share of living in rural areas. Different from urban population growth within a given city or urban sprawl, the physical expansion of urban areas. The process refers to the demographics between urban and rural areas. It occurs on regional, country-level, continental, and/or global scales. From the demographic perspective, it doesn"t happen to an individual city. Urbanization results from any of the following: Net migration from rural to urban areas. Natural increases in populations in urban areas (births - deaths). Reclassification of rural settlements to urban areas, such as when urban areas. The human development index has a correlation between the proportion of urban populations in developing countries. Indicators are life expectancy, education, and per capita income.
