Lingua francas: languages used to communicate between two languages. Pidgins: have reduced vocabulary of one language (usually the european one) and the reduced language of the other (usually the native one). They are a makeshift communication between two languages. Pidgins lack full/consistent grammar, making it hard to distinguish who did what etc. He made me out a cheque ; but you could also interpret it as i bought ) They are fully developed languages with lexical items and richer in grammar. Pidgins can never become a native language. Once they become a native language, they are creoles. Creole = pidgin acquired as an l1 by children. Consistent grammars emerge (stabilized word order, grammatical morphemes, tense, aspect ), vocabulary dramatically expanded. Contact languages: arise whenever two languages have come in contact for a period of time. Traditionally based on the lexifier/superstrate language (the language of the colonizer), which provided a large part of the vocabulary, rather than on the substrate(s)
