Today"s goal to understand the limitations of the x-bar theory we employ, for example, its inability to draw a tree according to its rules for the sentence: X-bar states that the degree adverb has to be in the spec of vp, but it cannot be drawn so in this french sentence. X-bar theory and the lexicon conspire to generate trees. The result of this tree generation is the d- structure" (deep/underlying structure) D-structure is subject to transformation rule which consist in moving words in sentence. Output of transformational rule is the s- structure (surface structure). S-structure is filtered and sent to grammaticality judgements (ex. We attempt to apply syntax rules and theories universally to all languages. The only difference should be in the lexicon. In the example: nicole mange souvent des pommes, we move the v-head. We leave a trace in the v-head position to show there was something in the deep-structure that filled that position.
