A verb can take arguments that are dps, cps and pps. In all of these example, the subject is a dp, but the complement varies phrasal types. In the past, we"ve been looking at syntactic restrictions; now we are adding semantic restrictions. Smile can take a dp subject but it cannot be a nonsensical dp (ex. Agent: the do-er" of an action. (usually dp subjects are agents) Experiencer: subjects can be experiencers; eal more with psychological: she loves her mom. Her mom is in the psychological state of being loved/condition (not. Theme: undergoes the action, usually objects an actual activity: she kicked the ball. [the ball] is the theme, it is being kicked. Goal recipient: she kicked the ball to the net. [the net] is the goal, where the action is heading towards. [my mom] is the recipient, receiving the letter. I bought him a book. (him = beneficiary) Not in textbook: pp with [someone] = company.
