LINB06H3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Cleft Sentence
Document Summary
Lecture 2 constituency, phrase structure rules, and trees. Words enter the sentence (s) one by one: does not explain why words come in the order that they come. Words are grouped into constituents (phrases), which are grouped into larger ones until we get a sentence. (hierarchy: does not explain why some groupings are possible, and others are not. Replacement: if you can replace a group of words with a single word, the group forms a constituent. Some of my students took a course this summer: use a pronoun. Stand alone: if a group of words can stand alone in response to a question, they the form a constituent. We will most likely go to the bar. Ask the question: what will we do friday night: go to the bar or most likely go to the bar constituents, *will most or will most likely. Movement: if a group of words can be moved in the sentence, they can be moved.
