Sidewalks emerged along with motor vehicles; prior to motor vehicles, all space was utilized for walking, and sometimes bikes and animals. Streets were not always spatially stratified into sidewalks (and more recently, bike lanes), and roads, for pedestrians, cyclists, and motor vehicles, respectively: this only occurred with the invention of the motor vehicle.
