MDSD11H3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Relate
Document Summary
These articles discuss identity and whether or not people can be themselves in the school. Hernandez article: very practical, takes theory and applies it to schools through a school leader rather than a teacher. Discusses gender and sexual orientation, and how schools continue to struggle in addressing issues pertaining to them. Morris article: intersections several variables like class, race, sexual orientation and how all three of these can impact an individual. They can affect how a student feels safe, valued, and accepted. They must feel safe and genuine in terms of all aspects of their identity. This is done by challenging deficit ideologies and serving one world view and culture over others. It can"t just be one aspect that we value. We must understand how broad notions of equity are (or even understanding one component of it, such as differentiating expectations for students living in a economically marginalized area) oh, they"re poor. the system is fair.
