Lecture 02 September 18, 2012 Marxist Analysis Theory Theory is an explanatory and interpretive tool that simultaneously The mode of production (economic relationships) is the base or the “determinant element” of our thoughts. Feudalism – A system for ordering society around relationships derived fro the holding of land in exchange for service or labour. Mode of production (System of economic relations) Institutions Legal system Philosophy Religion Ideas Arts Culture Base to Superstructure The ideas of the ruling class are in every epoch the ruling ideas. The ideas of any given age are those promulgated and popularized by the ruling class in its own interests The ruling class believes its own message It has within itself a group of conceptualizing ideologists who, as Marx puts it, “make it their chief source of livelihood to develop and perfect the illusions of the class about itself” The ruling classes – the bourgeoisie – try to convince everyone that capitalism is natural and therefore eternal The mass media perform their job of distracting people from the realtie
