Telegraphy did something that morse did not perceiveit destroyed the prevailing definition of information and in doing so gave a new meaning to public discourse. (p. 88) Before: info about fire in the building will lead students to take action and evacuate. Now: info about entertainment industry that doesn"t directly affect us or incline us to take action. The telegraph introduced a kind of public conversation whose form has startling characteristics: its language was the language of headlinesknowing the facts took a new meaning.
