Document Summary

Managers must carefully handle cultural tension or change. They must know how to manage a workplace with different cultures. Managers should break down any cultural barriers such as communication. Managers must understand the influence of culture in management practices so they can identify cultural phenomena and identify solutions. Cultural descriptions do not portray the entirety of the culture - there is more information hidden within a culture than shown. Must be objective as possible in describing cultures. Cultural descriptions can change over time and only be a first guess - do not base your entire knowledge or perception of a culture based on cultural descriptions only. Cultural differences can bring both benefits and problems to an organization. Can be perceived positively or negatively depending on the situation. Differences between two parties may not be perceived the same way - eg. a portuguese manager may appreciate danish punctuality but the danish manager may find portuguese tardiness annoying.
