MGMD10H3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Construals, Concrete Category
Document Summary
Temporal distance refers to the distance in time when people think about an event now or in the future, the paper measures temporal distance in terms of distant-future and near-future. People do not think in detail on events that are happening in distant future which make sense since there may be many changes that will occur between the decision making time and the time of event. Therefore decision making for distant-future events are usually more abstract compared to decision making for near-future events that are more concrete. Construal level theory proposes that te(cid:373)poral dista(cid:374)(cid:272)e (cid:272)ha(cid:374)ges people"s respo(cid:374)ses to future events by changing the way people mentally represent those events. The greater the temporal distance, events have fewer abstract features, compared to less temporal distance with more concrete events. Temporal dista(cid:374)(cid:272)e affe(cid:272)ts i(cid:374)di(cid:448)iduals" respo(cid:374)ses to future e(cid:448)e(cid:374)ts. Judgments, predictions, & choices regarding the more temporally distant events are likely to be based on higher level construals of events.
