Document Summary
Values: a general tendency to prefer certain states of affairs over others; preference- values that we consider are good/bad; values are motivational; how we should and should not behave; does not predict behaviour is specific situations very well; ex. We don"t know how a capitalist person would respond to a homeless person. Values are structured around factors: achievement, power, autonomy, conformity, tradition and social welfare; not everyone holds the same values. Most are socially reinforced by parents, teachers and religious leaders. Generation differences in values: traditionalists, baby boomers, generation x, millennials (generation y) Generation x and y experienced more dual career families/divorce. Latchkey kids/kids who know what divorce is, will listen to friends more than authoritative figures; Self-esteem and narcissism increased over the years for university students; gen x and y see work less central, value leisure more and are more inclined toward work life balance more than boomers.
