MGMD10H3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Social Rejection
Document Summary
The symbolic power of money written by x. zhou, k. vohs, and r. baumeister illustrates the concept that money is linked to physical pain. I believe the paper was published to provide insight on how even such a physical concept such as pain, can be manipulated by, interestingly, an unrelated abstract concept, represented by mere thoughts of having versus spending money. Thus, this contributes supporting research that our physical senses are highly subjective to the way our mind perceives things. The first conducted experiment involved 72 undergraduate students at a chinese. A possible issue with this paper is its generalization that money is equivalent to all individuals. Money is a complex issue and is valued differently based on life environment. For example, this study was conducted with predominately chinese students at a chinese university; thus, the conclusions drawn here may be limited to cultural differences (specific to the asian background).
