Each instrument in the gamelan has the same musical function in every piece. Most gamelan music accompanies dance, drama or religious ceremonies. Gamelan instruments and music have strong spiritual associations. Musical texture is heterophonic many instruments/parts all based around one melody. Many kinds of gamelan in java and bali (e. g. large/small, bronze/bamboo) In general, balinese gamelan music is faster, with sudden changes in dynamics and tempo. Javanese gamelan is often slower and softer, with some very long musical pieces. Concept of mode not as developed as in india and the middle east. More relevant to javanese gamelan where mode is called pathet. Pathet limit , must follow rules of mode. Pelog (5 or 7 tones with various intervals)
