Document Summary

Chapter 7: the structure of the nervous system. Nervous system of all mammals has two divisions: central nervous system (cns) and peripheral nervous system (pns) Direction pointing towards nose of rat = anterior / rostral. Direction pointing toward the rat"s tail = posterior / caudal. The right side of brain and spinal cord is mirror image of the left side bilateral symmetry. Midline invisible line running down middle of the ns. Structures farther away from the midline lateral. Midsagittal plane splitting the brain into equal right and left halves. Horizontal plane parallel to the ground. Split brain into dorsal and ventral parts. Coronal plane perpendicular to the ground. Splits brain into anterior and posterior parts. Parts of the ns encased in bone: brain + spinal cord. Rostral-most (anterior) and largest part of the brain. Two cerebral hemispheres, separated by deep sagittal fissure.
