Description
Chapter 15 Three components of nervous system that work in space & time 1) Secretory Hypothalamus: secretes chemicals into blood stream which influences both brain and body 2) Autonomic Nervous System: controlled neutrally by hypothalamus; influences blood vessels, glands and organs 3) Central Nervous System: several cells groups that differ depending on what neurotransmitter they use; -Cell groups extend spatial reach w/ highly divergent axonal projections & use metabrotopic postsynaptic r’s -called “diffuse modulatory systems of the brain” - influences/regulates mood and arousal RECALL HYPOTHALAMUS: - below thalamus along third ventricle; connected by a stalk to the pituitary gland (dangles at base of brain just above roof of mouth) Dorsal thalamus and hypothalamus adjacent BUT different from one another Dorsal thalamus: (point to point pathways neocortex) -Destruction creates sensory/motor problems i.e. blind spot or lack of feeling Hypothalamus: -Destruction creates somatic/visceral proble
