NROC61H3 Lecture Notes - Central Nervous System, Optic Chiasm, Neocortex
Document Summary
Cell groups extend spatial reach w/ highly divergent axonal projections & use metabrotopic postsynaptic r"s. Below thalamus along third ventricle; connected by a stalk to the pituitary gland (dangles at base of brain just above roof of mouth) Dorsal thalamus and hypothalamus adjacent but different from one another. Destruction creates sensory/motor problems i. e. blind spot or lack of feeling. Destruction creates somatic/visceral problems with brain needs i. e. dramatic/fatal problems of whole bodily functions. Homeostasis: maintenance of body"s internal environment within a narrow physiological range. Hypothalamus regulates range of body temperatures in response to changing external environment. Each side of hypothalamus has 3 functional zones: lateral. 1+2 zones: connections with brain stem and telencephalon and regulate types of behaviour. Periventricular zone: (named because lies right next to the wall of the third ventricle except for a some neurons laterally from opic tract called supraoptic nucleus) Suprachiasmatic nucleus (scn): which lies above optic chiasm.
