The role of memories and the ability to retain new information plays a vital role in the
livelihood and sustenance thereafter, of all animals. The role of episodic memory, the
autobiographical branch of declarative memory provides contextual information (time,
place and emotions) from a particular experience and can be crucial during similar
occurrences. Episodic memory, as with memory in general, is not confined to a single
locality anatomically in the brain; however the role of the medial temporal lobe and
specifically the hippocampus has been strongly been associated with episodic memory
processing/consolidation.
