PHLA10: Lecture 1 – Sept. 3, 2013  Philo = questions asked naturally by children (ie. Where do we come from) o Also tools used by lawyers naturally (paradigm: logic and reasoning based on “big questions”  No one solid answer to any question  Illusion  no phil q’s have ever been answered  Ancient Greeks  ex of big phil q = “what is matter” o Had a general idea o Now, scientific theories somewhat answers the question  Logical puzzles (train to Boston ex)  Philosophers fascinated by the possibility of thinking about something and then extracting information from it  Another big branch of philo = METAPHYSICS (comes from Aristotle’s writings) o By this we mean questions that go beyond the questions you find in the sciences o EX: why does anything exist at all? o Most common metaphysical q = does god exist?  God can also be thought of as a complex logical puzzle as there are many images and pictures attributed to the one word  A pure pic of god = “God = absolute knowledge, absolute power, absolutely good)  Also god is a some kind of person  Omni ambivalent, omnipresence, omnipotent (children POV: can god make a rock so big that he can’t lift it) o If god exists,
