PHLA11H3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Henry Sidgwick, Consequentialism, Experience Machine
Document Summary
Welfare consequentialism: henry sidgwick quote basically says that from the point of view of the universe, every life is the same, there is an impartial concern for the welfare of everyone, no partiality. It doesn"t say to prefer yourself over others, or vice versa. Therefore, when the aggregate level of welfare is maximized by either benefiting yourself or others, either one is acceptable. Individual well-being: related to welfare is many things such as happiness, quality of life, etc , this definition of wellbeing provides the foundation of welfare consequentialism. Many views of well-being: hedonism (pleasure, preference satisfaction (your own preference, objective list theory (a life that has a certain objective good) The experience machine: suppose there is a machine that simulates any life that you want. What matters besides experience: we want to do certain things, we want to be a certain way, we want to see results, we don"t want to be limited to a man made reality.
