Education v. retribution: the goals of education are concrete, education is a matter of conveying a moral message to the perpetrator of a crime. ideally, the criminal will take this message to heart and learn from it. Hampton: the educational theory of punishment explains why victims care about punishment. Arugment: punishment is communicative: practices suggest that we care about moral communication when we punish, education model can explain the communicative nature of practice, retributive model cannot explain communicative nature of practice. Education v. deterrence: education does pose some kind of limit, same problem as therapy (people stay in prison i(cid:374)defi(cid:374)itel(cid:455) u(cid:374)til the(cid:455)(cid:859)(cid:448)e lear(cid:374)t(cid:895). Deterrence v. education: cruel forms of punishment are not educational.
