Lecture 2 - Good Argument 12 January2011 16:20 - Acceptable is basicallysomething that isnot controversial. - Unacceptable premises: Science liberates the human spirit, whilereligionenslavesit. Cogent Sub-Arguments - Can there be arguments with controversial premises? Sort of There needs to be another argument that supports the premise You can have it as long as it has a supporting argument that has cogent premises - If a cogent sub-argument exists elsewhere,it is acceptable to cite it. - It is also acceptable to cite someone elsescogent argument. Highlydangerous because some peoplehave not read what you have read Argumentas arm wrestling, not as finding the truth But it is important to rememberthe argument and to take note that this is not an argument from authority If they still want to back up some more, either explainthe cogent argumentor just tell them to read the reference A Priori Premises - Premisesthat are true as a matter definition - from before e.g. thirteen is primenumber - Meaning of words, connection of ideas, etc. - With this, sometimesyou will need to do someclarification of the definitions themse
