Document Summary

Lecture 23 ~ laudan - science at the bar. Balanced treatment for creation-science and evolution-science act (act 590) Ood: a relatively recent inception of the earth and living. They rely on evidence to support the beliefs. Micheal ruse: believes that science and religion are compatible, historian of science, atheist. Q: what is science today: brought in the law, explanatory, testable, tentative, falsi able. Suppose, for an example, one found evidence in very old rocks, say of mammals, and then nothing r what scientists believe to be billion of years and then suddenly mammals come back again. That would obviously be falsifying evidence of evolution theory. We will focus on points 3,4 and 5. A scienti c theory must be tentative and always subject to revision or abandonment in light of facts that are inconsistent with, or falsify the theory. A theory that is by its own terms dogmatic, absolutist, and never subject to revision is not a scienti c theory.
