Document Summary

Week 3 lecture #5: tuesday january 19, 2016. Today: mill: third objection and reply, nozick"s experience machine. Two aims: demonstrate your understanding of utilitarianism, and the mill article, practice some of the key skills you will need for writing a philosophy paper. Just have to explain things clearly/ answer a bunch of question. Cite the text: even when you are not quoting, you need to indicate through citations where the ideas come from. There is no need to use any external sources. But if you do, be sure to cite them properly - whether you are quoting directly or putting things in your own words. There is no time prior to acting, for calculating and weighing the effects of any line of conduct on the general happiness. (mill, p. 176) The right action is the one that maximizes utility. But there is no time to do this calculation.
