Document Summary

Week 13 lecture #22: thursday, november 26, 2015. Qalyfying the value of life john harris. 1 yr healthy life expectancy = 1 qaly. False: high qaly best for me, not for all. Qaly policy: benefits few at expense of many, benefits young at expense of old. Able to live longer and have more quality. Would suggest the six to die for the seventh treatment. But no ration person would prefer that. Infants and children, b/c they yield more quantity. Fewer ppl will get hc (baby boomers) If showed certain groups have higher qalys than others. Would discriminate against ppl"s ethnic backgrounds, social class, gender. One person would live for indefinite number of years, but life would be of low quality. Other would only live for 2-5 years, but high quality of life. Doesn"t extend life, but would improve the quality of life. Want to place a certain priority on life saving treatments.
