Exercise 1: working with physical numbers in lab. A number encountered in the physics lab can be classified as to source, whether known or unknown. If the source of a number is neither of these, then the number is said to be of unknown source. Decimal form: a number is said to be in decimal form if it is written with a decimal point. Standard form: a number is said to be in standard form if it is written as: a. bc x 10d so in scientific notation. Decimal place: a number written in decimal form has one or more decimal places. Significant figures: the significant digits of a number are all the digits of a number irrespective of their place left or right of the decimal point, except the zeros that define the position of the decimal point. For example: the numbers 1. 23 x 105 , 123. , 12. 3, 0. 123, and 0. 000123 all have 3 significant digits.
