POLA01H3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Supply Chain, Sustainable Forest Management, Engo
Document Summary
Engos want different behaviour, ultimately from different individuals and corporations. Influence what rules regulations governments make as that affects individual and corporate behaviour. They influence those that make the rules. Instead of asking governments to change behaviour, they wish to make the rules to shape behaviour directly. This depends on the targets of the ngo. The strategies that they use direct action and raising ecological sensibility. Greenpeace is bearing witness , by this they are organizing marches, showcasing victims, demanding action as well as unveiling harsh truths. Environmental awareness of problems which aren"t always visible in different relatively spectacular ways so that they can get media attention. This also shows their commitment to their principles in the hopes of getting individuals and corporations to care more. Attempts to shame corporations to tarnish corporate reputation. Engo"s use market leverage to directly change without going through the government first. E. g the problem of tuna fishers grabbing dolphins in their nets.
