Document Summary

Political theory- lecture 3 on hobbes" state of nature. Think about life without the government to see why we need government. His claim of the state of nature: that its" terrible in the state of nature, life for human beings is nasty, bruttish and short . They don"t have houses, or belongs bc w/o government"s protection, order and security for the people there is so much violence can"t build up these nice things no gov. = no peace, security or safety = vulnerable to violence and high death rates. Pride (vain glory) one side thinks they"re more dominant than the other and openly compare and show this dominance over the other. Competition- compete to be the most dominant (competing over land as well) and that leads to war where only the most dominant wins.
