Others highlight the importance of history, specifically migration and settlement. Common to definition is sharing of culture, and language. Similar names and speak the same language. Folk immigrants non-northern or european descent. Ethnicity rests upon cultural similarities, kinship ideologies. Ethnicity is defined by an active consciousness of collective selfhood. Theoretical approaches to ethnicity: primordial the view that ethnicity groups are ancient and immemorial kinship groups. Identities are more fundamental than other types of identity. Ethnic mobilizations are motivated by expressive not instrumental needs. Ethnicity is not subject to rational cost/benefit calculations. People join ethnic movements when there is a pay-off doing so: marxism. Ethnicity is second to deeper forces such as material interests and class conflicts. (bourgeoisie and proletariat) Marxist revolution (workers of the world unite) will end ethnic based thinking they are internationalists.
