Development through the lens of power and politics. Politics has not previously been explored with development. Politics is who gets what, when and how. (harold lasswell) The ability to control or influence the behaviour of others. Coercive (real or threatened- gun on someone"s head) this is power that is being exercised on groups of individuals which is not considered legitimate. That set of organizations and institutions whose formal leaders (or these leaders and their allies) claim a monopoly of the legitimate use of force over a given territory that is recognized internationally. Especially in the global south, however including the global north. Globalization (economic): the elimination of economic borders and the increase in international exchange (trade, investment). Westernization: the breakup of the soviet block and the demise of communism, the emergence of trading blocks, mid 1970"s: decline of u. s economic power (rise of japan and germany, new technology, rise of the brics.
