Document Summary
Consciousness is used in everyday life and in medical terms. Doctors may associate consciousness with awareness and being awake. Psychologists may associate consciousness with what you are aware of, what you are paying attention to; you can be awake but not paying attention to something. Another definition is what you stand for and a sense of ourselves, self-awareness. Some groups do not think we should use consciousness as a thing, more like a state, an adjective. We use the word, consciousness in different contexts that may change what it means.
