PSYA01H3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Paul Broca, Black Slate, Empiricism
Document Summary
If a computer can do what a human can, is the machine intelligent: rene descartes: he was a troubled young man. He had a lot of breakdowns and anxiety issues. His doctor recommended him to go to a ower garden in paris. There were many sculptures and he saw the statue of neptune move. Which obviously blew his mind: things that move posses a soul. But this statue just moved: this life like statue is just a machine. So now he started to look at animals differently. He thought that humans are biological machines too. But he exposed it through cartesian dualism: a lot of what we do is just biological machinery, but a part of what we do, through a particular gland the soul can get in. So the body is the puppet to the soul. Friday, september 8, 2017: he believed that we are largely physically, and that the soul is there too.
