Psychology is a young science
Ø
100 years old till we have been studying ourselves
Ø
We are spirits in a material world (different in the world around us, we were physical
not material)
We didn’t apply science to ourselves
Ø
To pursue something scientifically one must first assume that the behaviours of that
thing conforms to some natural laws
Ø
If things are behaving to some rules, we need to understand it
Ø
If something is not due to physical law, we can't understand it
Ø
If we accept something that cannot be physical, we cannot study it scientifically, it is
spiritually controlled
This is why we didn’t study ourselves scientifically
Ø
After caveman's, we used to give everything souls including inanimate objects
Whatever we see, made of earth, air, fire or water
We used to think that each element wants to be each element, aka earth wants
to be with earth etc
Ø
Animism : gives a soul to something inanimate (non-physical)
To get over it (getting pissed off by the gods)
Sacrifice something (Young virgins), worship the gods
§
Gave everything a soul including god
Ø
Big blue hold and access all information (IBM)
Doesn't give it an animism (no soul)
We understand what's happening with big blue, software interacting with
hardware, he's intelligent, its physical that means no soul.
Ø
Rene Descartes (1596-1650)
If something move, then those things have soul at this time
Cognitively challenged, have nervous breakdowns
Doctor said to take a break, went to Paris
§
Palace, neptune blocked his path to Diana (Statue moved as it had
intention)
Worked through hydraulics, caused the motion to happen
§
Animals are just like the statue which are complex and biological machines
Physical things, birth of animal research
