PSYA01H3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Supercontinent Cycle, Ichnology, Plate Tectonics
Document Summary
Geology: the study of planet earth and its history (also referred to as earth science or geoscience) Physics: the study of elemental matter and energy. Geophysics: the application of physics to geology. Plate tectonics: the earth is broken up into many pieces. Driven by convection by the hot mantle underneath. Supercontinent cycle - the continents will become one after millions of years then break up again and form new oceans. This is al driven by convection of the earth"s mantle. China will be the center of the next supercontinent. We are halfway into the earths lifespan. Diamonds are found deep in the mantle. Law of superposition - oldest rocks always appear at the base. Structural geology - learning how rocks have been bent, folded, and broken. Fractures - allows water to move through rocks. A lot of rocks originate from sediments from oceans then get buried and harden and get turned into rocks.
