Psychology Lecture 13
The twin study design is flawed; it has a confound, because it includes genetics as well as the
environmental factors.
Slide 14: science is flawed, evolution is the scientific theory. This means there’s only one theory in its
category, because it’s very powerful, but that is not something that science does not favor, since in an
area you generally have multiple theories.
Altruistic behavior: where somebody puts themselves on the line to help someone else. Ex. Firefighters
charge into a building that is likely to collapse. This is not uniquely on humans; wolves for example howl
to warn other wolves of a hunter, but expose their own position to the hunter.
Altruism does not support evolution, since in evolution the driving force is reproductive success.
Altruism is a trait that can get an individual to be at risk in getting killed and the kinds that follow
altruism will eventually be ‘weeded’ out.
Slide 15: However, altruism can support evolution when it involves a group with the same genetic sets.
They try saving other family members in order for them to reproduce.
Slide 16: Reciprocal Altruism- people who risk saving strangers. An individual will consider the costs (the
risks, losses etc.) and the benefits (recognition, reward, raise your own level of attractiveness) in an
action.
Slide 17: the point is that genetics has become a larger role in science. Genetics define who we are. Ex.
Labrador retrievers love swimming in water because they were bred to retrieve ducks that were hunted
from the water. They have gentle mouths so that they refrained from eating the duck and leaving tooth
marks on the bird.
Evolution theory is a backdrop on how psychologists think.
Slide 18-22: psychological experiment: look at the center and ignore the flashes, but press a button
when a letter appears. The study looks at the reflex of the participant. This is especially fast when they
look at the letter opposite of the flash. This habit is because your eye tends to move to different
locations when you look for something. Evolutionary this is explained by our past habit of looking
visually for food in places you haven’t looked at. This is not testable, just an example.
