PSYA01H3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 16: Classical Conditioning, Edward Thorndike, Operant Conditioning Chamber
Document Summary
Stimulus-response psychology was used to map how they were formed. The way we are conditioned to respond to the environment are produced through evolution and are labelled as unconditioned stimuli (ucs) and unconditioned responses (ucr) Unconditioned are not learned, they just happened: if a baby s given food (ucs), the body automatically kicks into digestion mode. automatic response (ucr) Classic conditioning: the extension of sr mappings to new stimuli. Ivan pavlov(1904) is a scientist that discovered classical conditioning it explains how new stimuli can come to be associated with certain behavioural responses. He started with behaviourism: took dogs and injected tube on their throats to collect saliva. he wanted to give dogs different foods and see how their saliva glands react to each food. Classical condition is about forming associations: cs predicts ucs, builds on existing sr relations. Operant conditioning creates brand new behaviours: behaving in way x within context y leads to , can create complete new sr relations.
