Lecture 02: Personality
Personality: is a idividual’s harateristi style of:
a. Behaviour
b. Thought
c. Feeling
• is relatively stable across time and situations
The study of personality is the study of both:
1. individual differences (Idiographic approach): focusing on describing individual
differences (how do I differ from the average of the population)
2. Common trend in the population (nomothetic approach): how we are all similar
together in the way our personality develops across time (whole population or big
trends
There are two main components to study personality:
1. Desriig ad disussig idividual’s persoalities (siilarities and differences):
• What are the harateristis o a idiidual’s persoality
• Personality inventories (personality tests or scales)
2. Explaining personality:
• Why does an individual have the personality that he does?
• Ho does a idiidual’s persoality affet her ehaiour?
• Personality theories
o Personality can be measured by oserig the idiidual’s ehaiours
Personality measurements take one of two forms:
1. Personality inventories (personality tests/scales):
• Siplest ays to asses’ persoality
• Rely on self-report:
o Subjective descriptions of ones own behaviours, thoughts and
feelings
o Usually administered in an interview or written questionnaire
• Most online personality inventories have weaknesses in validity and
reliability
• Minnesota multiphasic personality inventory (MMPI) is a widely reliable
clinically valid personality test
