Document Summary
Psya02h3 lecture 6: social development & parenting. The desire for social relations is present at birth, and is bi-directional. Example of being bi-directional: maternal instinct from the mother, and suckling, cuddling, crying, looking and smiling from the baby: smiling begins around 5 weeks! Attachment is a lifelong emotional bond between a child and their caregiver. A person"s life long, adult attachment style is determined in these six months. Formed during the first six months of life. Put infant monkey in a cage with a cloth mother and a mother made of wire that has milk. Harlow thought that the monkeys would spend time with the mother with the milk because it provides them nourishment. The infant monkeys always clung to the soft cloth mother. Comfort, rather than reinforcement from nourishment, was crucial to attachment formation. Within these first few months of a child"s life, an attachment is put in way by how the caregiver acts towards their child.
