Document Summary

Psya02 lecture 8 sex and eating. Stomach contractions (pangs) send signals to the brain making us aware of our hunger. Individuals believed that this is how we knew we were hungry. In a research, a rat"s stomach was removed; however, the rat was still able to get hungry. Hunger is not associated with just stomach contractions. A feedback system between eating and insulin levels maintains homeostatic control of nutrition. Memory plays an important role in hunger. If individual"s cannot remember the last time they ate, they will continue to eat. Ex: amnesia patients will eat frequently if they are given food. This suggests that part of knowing when to eat is associated with our memory of our last meal. The food we grew up with will influence what we feel or not feel hungry for. Ex: going to a restaurant and seeing foods that are not your preference. Taste preference is a combination of body chemistry and environmental factors.
