Document Summary
Organized units of knowledge about objects, events and actions. Involves two processes: assimilation is the interpretation of new experiences in terms of present schemes. Example: as a child, you see black dogs growing up . It"s still a dog, but just different colour. You are able to assimilate new information and update that schema to include things like different colours: accommodation is the modification of present schemes to fit with. A child may call all four-legged creatures doggie . The child learns he needs to accommodate (example: change) his schemes, as only one type of four-legged creature is dog . It is through accommodation that the number complexity of a child"s schemes increase and learning occurs. Cognition at this stage is closely tied to external stimulation, and understanding characteristics of objects. Example: object permanence, out of sight, out of mind , peek-a-boo. Here the child begins learning how to think logically and how to use symbols especially language.
