Classification: how do we distinguish between mental disorders: look for overlap. Provide examples of what is normal and what isn"t. The definition of abnormal used in dsm-iv-tr (see image->) Abnormal describes behaviour, emotional, or cognitive dysfunctions that are unexpected in their cultural context and associated with personal distress or substantial impairment in functioning. Sometimes people can be highly functional with a mental disorder, or may not realize that they have a mental disorder. The scientific study of abnormal behaviour, with the objective to: describe, explain, predict, control. We see people in movies with clear-cut abnormalities (stereotypical abnormal behaviour)
