Chapter 17 lecture notes
-Behavior that makes the individual maladaptive, and doesnt let them function
normally in society.
- DSM version 4, TR- test revision.
--Agoraphobia- fear of open places.
-The main fear of having agoraphobia is having a panic attack.
- home is a safe base for people with agoraphobia because there are a lot of safe
persons that can take care of them during panic attacks.
- they have trouble trusting other people.
-Free floating anxiety- anxiety that has no need or reason.
- difficulty falling asleep/ excessive drinking/ women more than men.
- Chronic anxiety- feeling that they are doomed
- Many patients have physical ailments as well
-Turrets syndrome is considered a category of OCD.
- Compulsion is sometimes highly dysfunctional
- fear of contamination is a common symptom.
- some people may be biologically predisposed towards OCD. Serotonin: is a drug in
the brain that can cause imbalance.
-Persistent and exaggerated fear of suffering from an illness.
- learning mechanisms are similar to post traumatic stress disorder.
-The way we think can get us to anxious, we catastrophic misinterpret events to make
them seem really bad in our heads.
-Serotonin- is a very important neurotransmitter in the brain, sometimes used for
anxiety
-SSRI: selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors.
