Chapter 18- treatment of mental disorders
Gestalt theory- the purpose of therapy for the person is to come to feel in the
moment, individual ahs to be in touch with themselves, body, feelings in
oTherapist interprets clients talking about the past as resistance and avoiding
the topic ; being phony’
oFritz pearls- founder of gestalt theory
oCreate self confrontation of phoniness
oMaturation
oTechnique is not to answer clients questions so that they face themselves
oEmpty chair technique- asking client to imagine someone else in an empty
chair and explore the feelings of what to say to that individual (someone who
influenced their life/life experiences)
Helps them realize key people in their life who have played a role
Cognitive therapies- focus on the thought processes of individuals and how they may
contain conflicts/errors that are causing the problems
Rational emotive therapy- depression/anxiety is result of individual thinking in
maladaptive ways. Rational beliefs vs. irrational beliefs
oTherapist is searching out irrational beliefs and pointing -them out (very
directive)
oPast is not crucial in persons life
oSane sentence- I dont like the thing ive done
oInsane sentence- because I dont like my behaviour I am worthless
oGloria- most comfortable with carl rogers, afraid of pearls, couldnt keep up
with ellis
