PSYB01H3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Penicillin, Congenital Syphilis, Syphilis
Document Summary
Psyb01 lecture 2 september. 12th 2016- ethics and standards of scientific inquiry. Autonomy and protection of vulnerable populations: children, cognitively impaired, prisoners, elderly, economically disadvantaged, culturally disadvantaged, these people may feel pressure to go in and do the study. Deception: all studying can have deception but they have to be well orientated. Fairness and equity for participants: receiving benefits of research as well as bearing burden of accepting risks, making sure that you have learned something that is meaningful. Tuskegee syphilis study: 399 black men diagnosed with syphilis were never told of their illness, these men were enrolled in the study and given free medical care, meals, and free. It is progressive in a very severe depression: because the benefits were big, people did want to be part of the study, the risk is pretty high for getting that treatment, there was no respect in treating them.
