Operational variable: the researcher"s specific decision about how to measure or manipulate the conceptual variable. Ed diener reasoned that the word happiness might have a variety of meanings; this limited his interest to subjective well-being . He operationalised subjective well-being by asking people to report on their own satisfaction with life in a questionnaire format (5 items about their life satisfaction using a 7-point one)
