Sense of self may shift depending on who we interact with. Success and failure in areas of specific value to people influence their self-esteem more. Self-esteem tracks how people important to you feel about you i. e. hurts the most to say you were rejected by your peers, rather than you did poor on an exam. Contact with other cultures can influence views of the self. Correlational research suggests different cultures that come into contact with westerners have increased self esteems. However measuring self esteem across cultures depend on what each culture values.
