Document Summary
Social influence: refers to the large number of ways that people affect one another, including changes in attitudes, beliefs, feelings, or behaviors resulting from the comments, actions or even the mere real or imagined presence of other people. Examples of social influence: fashion trends, peer pressure, getting a favor, following orders . Influencing others is broken into 3 broad headings: obedience, compliance, conformity (each is requiring less overt pressure as we move from obedience to conformity) Ideomotor action: the phenomenon whereby merely thinking about a behavior makes its actual performance more likely. The following scenario exemplifies obedience: john is pouring himself a cup of coffee when his boss shows up and says, pour me a cup of coffee. john pours the cup of coffee and gives it to his boss. Obedience is following the demands (explicit request) of someone who is higher in social power than oneself. (ex: police officer) Example: following the orders of a police officer.
